Description: |
This is a common wood-warbler that is split into two distinct subspecies. The species is actually the Yellow-rumped Warbler, Dendroica (Setophaga) coronata, but the two subspecies are often thought of as seperate species because they both look, sound and act differently. The Myrtle subspecies (D. c. coronata) of this warbler is pretty much entirely restricted to the eastern states, but it is an occasional visitor to the west.
Dendroica means "tree-dwelling" and coronata means "crowned" referring to the yellow spot on their heads. |
