| Not all adult female black widows exhibit the red hourglass on the under side of the abdomen. Some may have a pair of red spots or have no marking at all. The females frequently eat their male partners after mating. Thus the widow in the name. A bite from a female does have the potential to kill a human but is extremely rare due to the small amount of venom injected and a human body is large enough to diffuse the venom. But a bit will be painful and their may be other symptoms. |
