Description: | |
One of the largest and fastest oceanic fish, Atlantic bluefin tuna have been clocked at 43 mph (70 kph). They can retract their dorsal and pectoral fins into slots to reduce drag and increase speed. Unlike most fish, bluefin have the ability to regulate their body temperature through a unique configuration of blood veins and arteries. This warmer body temperature allows them to swim faster and hunt farther north than most large fish. Individual fish have been known to make multiple trips across the Atlantic in a year. Unfortunately, these beautiful fish are prized for their meat and are being severely over-fished. The huge individuals that used to swim throughout the Atlantic are a very rare sight nowadays. | |
